Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness runs through my veins!
Hi Everyone:) Today I want to introduce you to one of my favorite authors, Jacob Needleman. Today, since it’s July 4th, I want to share some wisdom from Jacob Needleman’s book The American Soul.
Jacob Needleman: America was once a great idea, and it is such ideas that move the world, that open the possibility of meaning in human life.
Me: Jacob talks more, in his book, about America being an “idea” and how great ideas are what we are actually starving for – not more material consumerism. Materialism, yes, was part of the plan, but we have taken it to excess and have lost ourselves in the process. Materialism does not give meaning to human life. Growth is healthy – excess can easily become greed and gluttony.
Jacob Needleman: America was once the hope of the world, of equality, liberty, prosperity, safety, and opportunity, but the deeper hope of America was the vision of what humanity could become individually and in community.
Me: America was once about helping you become an awesome human being. Most of the systems governing us today are not about us (food, healthcare, education, business) – they have become about the dollar and material gain. There’s nothing wrong with money until you put it before the people.
In my field (mental health), I witness doctors, health professionals, hospitals, treatment centers, and pharmaceutical companies put money, material, and personal gain before “in the patient’s best interest.” It’s ethical medical madness!
Yes, our systems are failing us, but we can create change! Change is a gift of living on American soil, that most of us don’t take advantage of, but still granted to everyone. Let’s get back to our roots and remember who we are!
The American Dream was never about “the house” – it was about what we were capable of becoming with all the resources granted to us (internal and external).
We lost sight of our internal resources and our ability to have inner democracy. Today is the day to celebrate a new beginning for ourselves, our loved ones, and our community. We can start making our lives about becoming a better human- a more useful human in the world.
Have a real independence day today! We can stop waiting and depending on someone else or some other system to make it about us- to make our life better. We can do it ourselves!
We are granted more than enough freedom, and more than enough resources to engage in the pursuit of inner happiness. You have the right to be healthy, happy, and a better person, so take it! It’s Sooooo exciting! I told you this stuff runs through my veins.
We all have an inner democracy (it comes with the package of being human). We all have the ability to govern our own lives. We have the ability to govern our thoughts, actions, health, what we eat, and what we learn- and to not be dependent on failing systems. Today, let’s choose our independence from systems that are failing and making us weak.
